Objective: To help educators understand and implement anti-bias education in early childhood settings, promoting a deep awareness of diversity, equity, and social justice, and preparing them to guide young learners in recognizing and resisting bias.

Core Content:

  1. Understanding Bias and its Impact:
    • Definitions and types of bias (implicit and explicit).
    • Exploration of how biases develop and their implications on young children’s development and identity formation.
  2. Four Core Goals of Anti-Bias Education:
    • Identity: Nurturing each child’s positive sense of self and confidence in their identity.
    • Diversity: Teaching children to understand, appreciate, and respect human differences.
    • Justice: Helping children recognize unfairness and empowering them to respond appropriately.
    • Activism: Encouraging children to act against bias and discrimination, supporting fairness for themselves and others.
  3. Practical Implementation:
    • Strategies for creating an inclusive classroom culture, such as setting up an environment that reflects diverse backgrounds.
    • Developmentally appropriate activities and discussions that foster critical thinking about fairness and respect.
    • Integrating anti-bias principles into the curriculum through storytelling, art, and collaborative projects.
  4. Self-Reflection and Growth:
    • Guided exercises for educators to examine their own biases and learn how to model anti-bias behavior.
    • Methods for building strong partnerships with families and communities to support a shared vision of equity.
